Statement

My work investigates the combination of practical and abstract forms in ceramic, still-life groupings. I am curious about the way we interpret objects and how oral and written language informs our understanding. In still life painting, forms such as a bottles or jugs refer to the domestic and practical use. However, less familiar objects such as blocks or cubes refer to geometry and abstraction. Within an image, these different forms sit together with ease. However, with three-dimensional objects, this difference is heightened because of the potential for practical use. While images of objects exist in the distant and abstract space of a painting, my ceramic objects sit in the tangible space of reality, where there are different expectations of things
