Nicola Smith
Dinner in Hospital
Friday 7 January to 3 February 2014

Preoccupied with the process of painting, with repetition, and with the passing of time, Nicola Smith has spent the past five years painting French actor, director, and mime, Jean-Louis Barrault (1910 - 1994). She is interested in the relationship between cinema and painting, taking imagery from film stills. Recently, Smith has looked to Canadian film Ce qu'il faut pour vivre (The Necessities of Life), directed by Benoît Pilon, 2008. Set in the early 1950s, this new series of watercolours depicts scenes of dinnertime in a tuberculosis sanatorium in Québec City.
