Pat Brassington: This is not a Photograph
A Tasmanian Monograph
Quintus
Publishing 2006
224 x 204mm,
hardcover, 64 pp
$39.95 rapt
The
subtitle of this book pays homage to the Surrealist artist René Magritte
and his painting The Treachery of Images (1929) which shows a pipe
with the caption ‘This is not a pipe’. Pat Brassington’s work presents
puzzles for the viewer and pushes us to the boundaries where ideas and
images collide. The fantastic, the uncanny, the fetishistic and the
unbelievable are recurring themes. Often they cohere around the female
body and sexuality. Sometimes the conceptual content is dark, exploring
the underbelly of social relations; at other times it is light and
humorous. The author engages with the artists and her work in an attempts
to extrapolate on some of these ideas.
Anne
Marsh is Associate Professor in the Faculty of Art & Design at Monash
