Nicole O’Loughlin is an interdisciplinary artist who works across various mediums to explore societal issues, pop culture and the idea of the feminine. She works across textiles, painting, drawing and printmaking. Using traditional media in a contemporary context, Nicole challenges the notion of craft and pushes back against the industrialisation of the handmade.
Nicole graduated from the Tasmanian College of the Arts in 2009. During her undergraduate studies, she completed a year’s exchange at the Madrid Art School, soaking in the tradition of European art. In 2015 she received first-class honours and is currently a PhD candidate in Arts and Health and is a sessional tutor at the Centre for Arts and Media. Nicole’s work been acknowledged through various awards including winning the Henry Jones Art Prize in 2023 mixed media category, highly commended in the Lester Portrait Prize, People’s Choice award 2020 Paul Guest Prize, and Packers Prize in the Hadley’s landscape prize. She has also been a finalist in the Archibald Salon des Refuses, The Alice Prize, Wangaratta Contemporary Textile Award, Hutchins Prize, Burnie Print Prize, Henry Jones Art Prize and the Women’s Art Prize Tasmania. She has completed residencies in China, Argentina, Maatsuyker Island and the Hutchins School in Hobart. Her work has been featured in Artist Profile and on art blogs like The Fiber Studio. It is held in numerous private and public collections, including the Australian Parliament House Art Collection, the Tasmanian State Government Collection and the Australian Textile Museum in Ararat.
Nicole's first solo exhibition at Bett Gallery is scheduled for late 2025.
