As a young kid I hung around the edges of football; the weeknight training and the Saturday games. It was a social thing. I tried playing but was pretty hopeless and by the age of eleven I discovered surfing which was a better fit with my athletic skills and temperament. After decades of a kind of disdain for the culture of football I was dragged back into it by the enthusiasms of my young son. Now I am a pretty keen footy dilettante though my nerves prevent me from watching whole games. I get too het up and it brings out a largely supressed competitive nature in me.
