Gay Hawkes - Narryna: seaborne

5 February - 5 April 2025
Overview

A pioneer in the use of found material...

Seaborne is a solo exhibition featuring renowned Tasmanian artist Gay Hawkes held at the historic merchant's house, Narryna. Gay Hawkes is a maker of sculpture and furniture and a producer of performance events and installation. This exhibition follows on from Gay's major retrospective "The House of Longing" at the Tasmanian Museum and Art gallery in 2022. Her sculptures and furniture are represented in most major Australian public galleries and collections, including the National Gallery of Australia, the Australian Parliament House Collection and the Australian War Memorial Art Collection.

Forty years ago I first collected shipwreck pieces and flotsam from the Bass Strait Islands and the South East Tasmanian coast to make furniture which speaks of history, calamity and the power of the sea.

Gay Hawkes, 2025

Gay's work embodies a life long passion for collecting and reusing salvaged and found materials. This exhibition is symbolic of the relationship between the personal memories, history and stories held within Gay's extraordinary works and Narryna, as the keeper of the Tasmanian community's memories and histories.
