When we were boys working on Babel we were sent by our Elders to get flour for our damp- ers and Johnny cakes to have with our cooked birds. We would cross the spit and walk some thirty miles down the eastern side of Flinders Island into Lady Barron port. We camped over- night and then walked all the way back the next day, crossing the spit, back to the island with the flour bags on our heads and sometimes up to our neck in the sea.
