I don't paint stories, I don't paint narratives. I'm more interested in sensation, like experiencing the painting as an object or as an experience, rather than a sequence of events. And you hope that people are drawn to what you're inexplicably drawn to. And I can't tell you how I do that, or how any good artist does it, but that's what I'm trying to do. Trying to do something that is unexplainable.

Drawing is fantastic because it's so quick and immediate, so spontaneous. Paper is beautiful in itself. A blank sheet of paper has its own beauty, and then the charcoal, the way it just crunches as it drags across the surface. It's like running your hand across skin or a beautiful piece of material.
